Which Compound to Use to Manufacture a Cooler Fan Blade

What Is It?

How It's Manufactured

Glass fiber is melt-compounded into ABS resin on a twin-screw extruder, with the screw profile set to disperse fiber evenly while preserving enough fiber length to deliver the rigidity gain the reinforced grade is chosen for.

Manufacturing Process for This Application

Fan blades are injection molded from the dried, reinforced compound. A fan blade is a thin, cantilevered, rotating part — mold flow and gate placement are designed so the glass fiber orients favorably along the blade for stiffness rather than causing uneven warp that would throw the fan out of balance.

Why Polymer Choice Matters Here

An unfilled ABS blade would flex and vibrate at running speed and lose efficiency (or generate noise) from that flex; a metal blade would solve the stiffness problem but at far higher weight, cost, and rotational inertia — glass-filled ABS is the deliberate middle ground for a lightweight part that still holds its shape at speed.
