What Is It?

NEXXALAC™ Electroplating Compound is an ABS grade formulated specifically for electroplating and metalizing processes, distinct from standard ABS grades that are not designed to accept a plated finish reliably.

How It's Manufactured

The compound is formulated so its butadiene rubber phase etches consistently during the pre-plating chemical etch step — this etched surface texture is what the plated metal layer mechanically keys onto, and getting that etch behaviour consistent batch to batch is the main reason this is a distinct grade rather than standard ABS.

Manufacturing Process for This Application

Parts are injection molded first, then sent through a multi-step electroplating process (etch, catalyze, plate) rather than being finished in the molding step alone. Medium flow in the compound is specified deliberately to balance moldability against the surface uniformity the plating process needs.

Why Polymer Choice Matters Here

A standard ABS grade not designed for plating can etch unevenly, causing patchy adhesion and visible plating defects — for a decorative, highly visible part like a badge or logo, this is a cosmetic failure that a general-purpose ABS grade's otherwise-adequate mechanical properties cannot compensate for.
